![]() ![]() So much to where in 2005, for Blinks’ greatest hits album, fans demanded Carousel to be placed on it. But how we play it now so many different years and so many people like it or whatever… I had a really interesting moment with that song last night trying to figure out why it’s still around.” Maybe it is the nostalgia, or it’s the genuine love for the track, that fans couldn’t get enough of. I was playing it and thought, ‘Why am I playing this?’ The lyrics are so bad, but I guess it’s nostalgic, which is cool.” He told Rolling Stone in 2013: “I always feel I wish I wrote better lyrics, yet at the time it was so different for pop-punk. Tom spoke about the song in 2012 with MusicRadar: “ “I was thinking about it the other night. Lyrically they’ve written better songs, structure-wise they’ve made better songs, but yet this song has become practically immortal among hardcore fans (for the most part, I met a Stan that thinks it’s overrated lol). ![]() But since its inception, Carousel has become a fan favorite within their catalog and has remained a staple at their live shows: from in house shows, to local clubs, to Big Day Out, to Reading Festival it’s been played practically everywhere. Is it their best song?, of course not, hell it’s not even their best album opener (again that’s subjective, that’s up to you guys). It’s also interesting to note Tom was18 when they wrote this song, so it’s context hits a bit hard knowing Tom was barely out of high school drives the emotion of the song. Lyrically, it deals with loneliness as Tom has officially left school, but while at the time he resented it but as he’s officially forced into the real world, he’s never felt so alone. Then the song finally kicks into high gear as the drop happens and Tom makes way with lead single note riff action that attracts the ear with its playfulness, simplicity, and catchiness, which is fitting with a title like Carousel. Opening with a Marks bass line (or Guitar intro then bass-line depending on which version you are listening to) as it slowly builds into Toms guitar joining, as the build-up continues the moment soon hits and Toms kick in his distortion making room for, then drummer for the band, Scott Raynor to add in his drumming to the picture. Continuing he explained: “We’d only known each other for less than an hour and the song was fairly formed even then it was weird”. I showed him a bass-line I’d been working….” further explaining how Tom happened to have a guitar riff that worked well with his bass-line. Mark Hoppus spoke about the day in a Reddit AMA saying: “Carousel, we wrote it the very first time we met. The first Blink song off Chesire Cat “Carousel”.Īppearing on their 1994 demo tape “Buddha” as the opening track as well, Carousel was the first song Tom and Mark made together during their first jam session. However, there is one song that has remained immortal in the band’s discography. From the All the Small Things (feel proud if you know all the videos they were referencing in that one video), First Date, Adams Song, I Miss You featuring Toms verse so iconic you can’t help but automatically sing along in your best (or worst) Tom Delonge impression, and What’s My Age Again. Conquering MTV and Living at TRL, Blinks music is one of the staples of the 00s that reminds people of the simpler times where American Pie movies were in theaters every 2 years and we watched Diddy make people get him cheesecake on Making the Band. Now as the years have gone by, Blinks carried on, members changed (to help grasp this concept Mark is the only original member of the band), dick jokes fluctuate, and the band has become a household name influencing bands such as Sum 41 & Panic! At the Disco (Fun fact: who started as a Blink-182 cover band). 2 years later, Enema Of The State was released that went on to become one of the most influential pop-punk albums of all time, up in the same utopia with Green Days “Dookie”. ![]() Now, of course, we know Blink-182 went on to have success with their follow up 1997s Dude Ranch thanks to their pop-punk classic hit “Dammit” giving them more traction in the mainstream market. A skate punk album that would be the foundation of the pop-punk trio and the beginning of a career that would change the lives of many teens while also pissing off “tastemakers”. 25 years ago marks the release of Blink-182s debut album Chesire Cat. ![]()
